I found that St.Johns university is far different from FuDan University, which is my undergraduate university. Especially the registration, it is totally two different "world". In FuDan, the only thing which students should do is go to your college two-five days before open school, and your tutor would handle all the things. Here is totally different thing. There exists every kinds of "hold" from every department such as health center. Sometimes you even donot know why they hold you. The health center hold you just because you have not complete the immunization, it is acceptable. The most ridiculous hold is from the ESL office. When I come to the office, the officer told me the reason why their office hold me is just because they want to know which ESL couse I will choose next semester. Another ridiculous hold happens on Henry. His department hold him just because they lose his undergraduate transcript and they want to ask him another copy.

Back from Philadelphia

I am back from Philadelphia. This trip is both exciting and tried. My friend who lives in Philadelphia is a volleyball coach and he is now working in Temple University. He has invited me to visit Philadelphia many times. It is very convenience to go there. The cheapest way is take bus in China Town. It only take you 10 bucks. My impression of Philadelphia is this city is smaller than New York, but this city is cleaner than New York. Luckily, I met two famous volleyball player in my friend's house. They are the ex national team player of China and now they are studying in Temple. These two ladies are all 190cm tall, this make me fell uncomfortable and a little jealous. Next day, I visited University of Pennsylvania and the liberty bell. The liberty bell is only a bell, but U-penn is very very beautiful. It is a different style from St.Johns. The whole campus looks like a small peace town and the buildings are diaphanous. Sunday morning, I visited Philadelphia museum of art. My friend told me that the museum in Washington DC is more excellent. Then I decide to go to Washington DC next time.

Thanksgiving day

What a bad weather today!!! I planned to join the macys's thanksgiving pageant, which is the traditional item in Thanksgiving day, in Manhattan today, but the bad weather cancelled my plan. Then I went to my friends Jason's house instead of going out. Jason is a high school boy in a military high school which is located in Pennsylvania. We had known each other in Shanghai. He told me lots interesting stories happened in his school. He told me that everyday morning they were marching 3km with a 30kg package and the last 10 boys would be asked to clean the classroom. They have lots of physical practise such as horizontal bar and push-up every night. This cause that he looks much stronger and more mettled than he was in Shanghai. I believed that his mother will happen to see his change. He also told me that his school will offer pilot course next year. It's amazing! I feel a little bit jealousy. I had thanksgiving dinner with them and we ate chafing dish and turkey. To be honest, the turkey is not as tasty as I thought.

Money

Money plays a decisive role to individuals, to families and even to countries or nationalities. There exist a Chinese proverb “one cent short may put a hero in an awkward situation” Otherwise, why is everyone, from doorkeepers to presidents, trying to earn as much as possible? Why does every country need Chancellors of the Exchequer, who keep formulating and revising financial laws and regulations? How different it is to be a creditor nation and a debtor nation! The United States is playing the tyrant just because it is wealthy enough. A poor man may cherish lofty aspirations, but will probably be beaten because of his poverty. The Afghanistan may have won a lot of sympathy, but how difficult it would be to live solely on charity. We are living in a material world, and it's really difficult to deny the function of money or wealth. We need money for food, clothes, education, hospital, housing and transportation, etc. There's rarely anything that doesn't need money

The Million-Pound Note

I still remember an old The English film “the Million-Pound Note” , which I saw when I was in high school . The film makes a most vivid revelation of such a situation: A guy hold a million pound note and with the million pound note in hand, the guy has the privilege to buy on credit or on loan and is even presented money from others. It's an idealized end of the story that the hero is still loved by his girl friend even after he lost his million-pound note. However, without the million-pound note, they couldn't have known each other. It's very difficult for people to make friends directly with beggars.
Until now I always think about a question: If I have million pound, How will I spend the money?
I used to have lot of answers, but now I think I would like to use all the money to establish a real Chinese restaurant in New York :-P

Olympic 2008 in Bei Jing

In 2001, in the Moscow world trade center, when the former chairman of the International Olympic Committee, Samaranch had said: "Beijing, China!" As a Chinese, I had a great joy for my home country from the bottom of my heart! But after the excitement that Beijing had been succeed in the race to host the Olympic Game in 2008. I started to worry about the dusty air, the sandstorm, the polluted rivers and lakes; the streets without any green and whether we could successfully host the Olympic Games in 2008. Therefore the Beijing government had made a great effort in order to protect the environment, build more "Green project", keep the ecological balance, push the recycling economy, and protect the water resource. But if only the government take the action to realize the Green Olympics in 2008, its not enough. All the Chinese people especially the people live in BeiJing should play an active role in the actions aimed at the realization of Green Olympics.

In spite of the human civilizations over thousands of years, people cannot deny the function of money. This shows how important money is. There's rarely anything that doesn't need money, but whether money is almighty? The answer is absolutely not! I believed there exist some thing in the world cannot be affected by money such as life and love.

I can clearly remember when I was ten years old I was transferred from the elementary school in the countryside to the school in the city, far away from my home. I had no choice but to live in one of my relatives’ near my school. This transition changed me a lot and even formed the foundation of what I am today. Before I went to the city, I was a naughty child caring nothing but play. I had many friends of similar age to me. We played together and had a lot fun. But after, this situation was totally changed because the atmosphere in the city was far different from that in the countryside. For the students from city always looked down on those from the countryside. I felt the cold shoulder for the first time in my life: I had no friends, no fun, but solitude, and even some bad guys called me “clodhopper” sometimes, which greatly injured my self-esteem. I could do nothing but studied hard to be an outstanding student. This is why I was so excellent in elementary school study. And also through this way, I won the esteem from my classmates, and even teachers. More important, during this period, I began to be adapted to solitude little by little. Then I learned how to use the time effectively and how to control myself, which greatly exceeded the students of the same age with me. Till now, I still benefit from these.

Yesterday I finally received my Combination's mid-term score. I should knew it last week, but my professor cancelled the course last week. The score, which I have looking for 2 weeks, is not as good as I thought. It is supposed to be A, but the professor only gave me a B-. I felt frustrated because I had spent lots of times on it. Then the professor said that she did not satisfy about our mid-term. The reason is that there are too much "c", it is unexpected. She thought that we should have more B in the exam. It is so glad to heard that I am still a member of the top students. And I found that the professor had taught much slower than usual, then the class became a little boring.
Today I bought a coat in Macys, because I fell my clothing are not enough for the winter here. I like Macys, it is capacious and not many customers. The waiters only come to you when you call them. So I feel free in it

10/30/2006

I met some strange things yesterday. First, when I on my way to the basketball court at 9:30 AM, I found the peoples outside is much less than usual. I thought the reason maybe the bad weather and the strong wind. Then when I arrived the court, I found no one there. It is unusual!!! There must filled with peoples as usual. I supposed that the basketball should be cancelled because the strong wind. So I had to back home.
Second, I found that the TV show I used to watching had changed its time yesterday. All the TV shows had delayed one hour. I am confused about this. Then I called my best friend--Adam and told him all the strange things. He told me that all the strange things I had met are because The time has changed!! After I finished the call to Adam, I received a call from one of my basketball friend, they asked me why I absented today. Then I told him that I donnot know the time had been changed. Unfortunately, he laugh at me and he said that is common sense in US

things happeded yesterday

I got up very early yesterday morning because I had to the health center for MMR shot. Although I am not very clear what is MMR, it seems that I have to get this because the New York public health law had required it. The professor said if we donnot have this immunization, the university will evict us. After I arrived the health center at Junction Blvd, I found lots of international students and south American immigrants there. A doctor described what is MMR to us, then I realized that I had injected the mumps and rubella in China when I was a children. I told it to my doctor, but she asked me to give her evidence, otherwise I should injected it, and she also told me that it will be OK if I inject the mumps and rubella again . So finally I followed her advise. After I finished my shot, I asked the nurse where to pay the charge. I was surprise to heared it is free. That's great!!! I had heared it is very expensive here for shot. It seems I have saved my money:)

The winter in US

I had heared that the winter in NEW YORK is very long and very cold in China. But New York's winter is so cold that it is out my image. My friend told me it is just the beginning, it will be frozen in Jan and Feb. And sometimes the school will be closed because the snowing. I am looking forward the snow, not for the school will be closed, because in Shanghai it hardly snow in winter. In my memory, I only remember 3 times, 2 times in my elementary school and 1 times in my high school. Although it is chill outside, inside the room is warm because it have heating system inside. It is so great for me!!! But I have to change 3 buses to go to school, the most oppressive thing is waiting the bus outside, because the bus always comes very slow. I wish I can drive to school in the winter.
About the drive licence, it is also depressed me. The procedure for the international student to apply a drive licence in New York is so difficult. I began to prepare it at Sept, but until now I still not complete all the documents they needed.

The mid-term is over!!!!

Finally, the mid-term is over :) The first mid-term in USA. The result is not bad. I got A in Complex Analysis and B in ESL. I will have my Combination score tomorrow and the Linearly next week, but I think maybe I had not done well in those two. Especially, today's linearly, I spent 2 hours to complete the questions. I think it is like a liberal arts exam, because the first question is writing down the definition. The questions about the definition is more than the calculate. It is impressed me .
Another thing in today's mid-term is also impressed me. One of my friend, a black guy, has done a thing during the exam that would never happened in China. One hour after the exam begin, he told the professor that he could not understand any question on the paper, then he left the paper to the professor and went home. But the professor not censured but consoled him. It can not be allowed in the China. If this happened in China, the student should be punished!!

The mid-term is coming; part two

The ESL I think is also can be easy because professor Chad have given us lots of practices. I think I have the progress in the structure. But I am afraid about the vocabulary. You know I am a international student, maybe I can spoken and read but sometimes I cannot spelling correctly without the dictionary. I suppose that Professor Chad can let us use the dictionary, so we can write a well composition in the mid-term. I know lots of American also use the dictionary when they are writing the essay. I think in the future we will have less chance to write without dictionary, in the now days, we use WORD for writing and we use dictionary software to checking the spelling error.
And I am best afraid of the Linear algebra. Because I cannot completely understand this course. The questions are so abstract and are the questions are subjective question, I must do lots of paper work on solve one question. And all the questions are not only have one correct answer, so I did not have a correct example for the homework. But the professor said last week that he will give us some examples for the exam. I hope it will work.
So I will well prepare the mid-term because this is the first important exam in USA!!!

The mid-term is coming; part one

I have a good new and a bad new. Let me tell the bad new first: Next week is the week for mid-term!!! Although I only chose 4 courses this semester, it is still a heavy job for me. But the good new I have is the 4 course's mid-term is not in the same week!! The schedule I have the next 2 week is as follow:
Oct 17: complex analysis; Oct 19: combination
Oct 25: Linear algebra; and the ESL writing is not be bespoken, may be Oct 25 or Oct 27
I have to work hard this weekend in order to well prepare for the exam. but I think I can have a great score in complex analysis, because I get a full mark in last quiz :) So I have only reviewed the homework I have done in the past and I re-do the subject I have done wrong. I think it is enough to the mid-term. and the combination may be a little trouble since sometimes I cannot really understand the question, so I have to spend more time on thinking it. But I have confidence to handle it.

Today is Columbus Day

Sorry to post the blog one day late, but I am too tried yesterday, all I want to do yesterday night is sleeping. I still feel ache all over when I get up this morning. Maybe I have over exercised at Sunday. But I used to play basketball all afternoon in the college and never feel exhausted like this time. Maybe the answer is I am old or the weather in USA .......... I will not put myself in this kind of status anymore. I can hardly pick something on the ground because the ache.
Today has a good weather for holiday--sunshine but not hot. American have lots of holiday such as Columbus day, All Saint's Day and so on. and almost every holiday the school will close class. It is the huge difference between China and USA. You know in China, we also have various holidays, but we still need to work and study in lots of the holiday. We only have 3 7-days-long holidays every year: it is The May Day; The National Day and The Chinese New Year. And the school never have the spring break. So I think the US students are the happiest in the world.

my new friend

Today I have a new friend "paul". I met him in today's basketball game and soon we become best friend. He has already lived in USA for 8 years--4 years High school and 4-years college, and now he is a banker in the Citibank. When we saw him, I think maybe he is a high school student or a freshman in college. He is very politely say hello to everybody, but as soon as he touch the ball, he become very "aggressive" and the leader of their team. He can play basketball very well, and he is fast, he jumps very high, almost can touch the basketball ring, also he can shot every place in the basketball court. It is no doubt that he is born for basketball.
The time passed fast today, soon it is noon. All my friends return home for lunch, and me and paul go to the nearest Korean restaurant for lunch. We talked very happy in the lunch time, he told his experience in USA and give me lots of advise about the future. After lunch, we decided go back to the court and continue play. Although only we two in the court, we still play very exciting this afternoon. I am so glad to make this friend.

As we all know, Oct. 1st is the National Day of People's Republic of China. Happy Birthday Day my motherland :-) And we will have a 7-days long holiday in China from Oct. 1st to Oct. 7th. When I was in China, I always used the 7 days for travelling, because fall is the season for travelling in nature. The temperature in fall is not so hot for the outdoor trip and the weather is always clearness. I remember my family had spend the holiday Sichuan province last year and we had a trip to Hainan province 2 years ago. China is so big that there are lots of place worthy to visiting. I have visited lots of place such as I spend 1 month in XinJiang province--the westest province of China; I have travelled along the "Silk Road" ; I have visited PuTuo mountain and WuTai mountain, there are members of the Fore Famous Buddhism Mountain and so on.
Yes, obviously I love travel, I love beautiful landscape, I am willing to learn the different culture, Especially I am charmed by the archaic architecture. It is unbelievable that our ancients can made the fantastic grand building with rough facilities. So we have the duty to protect it

The tired Tuesday

This Tuesday is the most tired and strained day since I have arrived in New York. I met a accident, then I missed my first class and got my first quiz in Tuesday .
Tuesday afternoon, maybe 1:30 PM, I took the Q30 bus to university. As usual I were listening MP3 to kill the time on bus. But soon I found the bus was on the way I had even seen. The first opinion in my mind is: I take the wrong bus!!!! But it cannot happened because I found it is absolutely the Q30, then I went to the driver and asked why she change the route. The driver said there is a serious traffic accident in front of the Gate A of St.Johns and the Police had already blocked the street so she must detour. And she also friendly told me if I want to go to St.Johns, I'd better get off the bus and walk to the University. So finally, I had to spend 1 hour on walking and walking. When I arrived the classroom, the class has passed half. But Pro.Chad did not blame me and let me join the class immediately. :)
And About my first quiz, I think I can get a good score on it because it seems easy for me.

My weekend

I met a very embarrassed thing:I forgot my blog use name! So I spend almost 15 minutes in remembering the use name. Finally I recollected it. If I cannot recollect it, all I need to do is open a new blog again. I do not want to do this again!
Let me tell something about my weekend. Yes I went to the basketball appointment yesterday morning, and I have a lot of fun with my ball-mates. Although they are older than me, we still have a good communication. I also had a new friend yesterday , he is a Africa American. I must admit two things: 1. Africa American are born of athlete. 2. I cannot understand what he said.
But it does not matter we make friend. So in order to improve our friendship, I go to the court today morning......... Now I am exhausted, my fingers are thrill now. If I write the blog in handwritten, it must be a fiasco. Fortunately I have no class Monday, I think I need have a long sleep tonight.

My new blog!

haha~~~~~my new blog born!
Another week has passed, I feel exhausted because I spend almost 3 night on homework, endless homewooks. Althought I have only choose 4 courses this semester, almost every professor give me huge homework to do. Especially our Combinatorics professor, we like to call her "grandmother" because she is at the age of grandma. The most frequent word is "practice, practice and practice". Every time she assign the homework, all the class will say together"practice, practice and practice". And she just smile and say"enjoy your life!". This maybe the difference between chinese professor and US professor. In china's university campus, no one can do this thing.
Tomorrow morning I will have to play basketball, so I must get up at AM7:00. I have to get up althought I cannot get up early because I was promised this appointment last week. I don't want to lose my credit. Wish tomorrow will be a nice day!
